Advocating for fair parking laws and reasonable enforcement for lawfully registered vehicles in San Francisco
What’s happening?
San Francisco residents who legally own and operate work vans and recreational vehicles are being impacted by parking rules that extend beyond their original purpose. Right to Park SF exists to support civic engagement aimed at correcting both how these rules are enforced and how they are written.
In many cases, this includes vehicles owned by residents who:
- Are fully registered and insured in California
- Are not being used for long-term habitation
- Have paid for neighborhood parking permits
- Had little or no clear notice of enforcement changes
Why this is a policy issue
The current ordinance does not sufficiently distinguish between unsafe long-term habitation and lawful vehicle ownership. As written, it allows for broad interpretation and inconsistent application, resulting in consequences that affect residents well beyond the law’s intended scope.
When a law consistently produces outcomes that were not anticipated—or that conflict with other city policies—it is appropriate to review, clarify, and, where necessary, amend that law.
Our Focus
Right to Park SF is focused on constructive, civic solutions, including:
- Documenting how the current law affects lawfully registered vehicles
- Encouraging reasonable, intent-based enforcement in the short term
- Advocating for clarification, amendment, or correction of the underlying ordinance
- Supporting policy changes that clearly differentiate between unsafe habitation and lawful vehicle use
Our goal is not to weaken parking enforcement, but to ensure that the law itself is precise, balanced, and aligned with its stated purpose.
What This Is / What This Isn’t
This is:
- A civic resource focused on policy review and reform
- A coordination point for residents affected by the current law
This is NOT:
- An effort to avoid lawful parking rules
- A campaign against public safety or accessibility
- A political endorsement organization
